Twang Rocks rocks in the sun

Great weather allowed rock fans of all ages at Testbourne to enjoy the music, sunshine, bouncy castles and drinks, all at the same time. Four venues, the huge outdoor stage (new this year), the Theatre Hall, the large hall and the Open Mike Stage all provided music to be enjoy by the crowds from lunchtime until midnight.

Organiser Rob Dunlop is pleased with the way the event has gone and hopes that there will be a four figure sum for the Testbourne Mityana Project and our own 2012 Olympic contender, Holly Croxford.

Plenty of Activity at the Silk Mill During the School Holidays

Whitchurch Silk Mill will be running children's activities from Tuesday to Thursday each week during August. From 11.30 - 3.30pm there will be the opportunity to have a go at Chinese silk painting, silk painting flags and Kimono Peg Dolls; the theme reflects the current Olympics. These sessions are led by the Mill's experienced and delightful education officer. They don't need to be booked in advance. There is a charge for admission unless you have previously visited the Mill and gift aided your admission and there is a charge for each activity.

The exhibition of vestments from Salisbury Cathedral continues until the end of August and features contrasting old and modern vestments. It is thought provoking to think of the huge amount of time that would have been dedicated to making them.

Whitchurch Town Council Election

Sharon Prince, Paul McGarvey and Mike Fitzgerald have been elected as Whitchurch Town Councillors.

The figures (supplied by B&DBC) suggest that only 758 of the 3,630 eligible voters took part (a lot by post). The number of votes cast show that most voters only voted for 2 candidates.

Whitchurch Festival will be back in 2009!

At a meeeting on Sunday, the Festival Committee reviewed the recent activities and plan to repeat (and improve) all the vents next year. The committee also agreed to stage a meeting in early autumn to show photos of the events and ask for help to make next year's Festival even better.

There are still some outstanding bills to be paid and, hopefully, some more money to come in. As soon as this happens the Committee will decide how much will go to which Whitchurch Charities.

Carnival Procession and Fete Success

Heavy overnight rain made the day look in doubt but a colourful procession led by the new royal family brought large crowds out all

along the route and filled The Square.

Large numbers then moved on to fill the Millennium Green where they saw the royal family crowned by the Mayor and the last Carnival Queen and enjoyed the food, fun and music.

All the participants in the procession were great and the judges found it difficult to differentiate betwen them but eventually decided:

Joint Best Small Group - The Flower Pot Men (and Weed) and the Wizard of Oz

Best Walking Group - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Best Vehicle Float - 1st Whitchurch Cubs

Best Commercial Float - Pirates of the Carribean.

The Festival Committee would like to thank all who took part in any way and those who generously donated.

... and Whitchurch owes a big vote of thanks to the man who thought we might just do it - Rob Dunlop - who's still working on Twang Rocks in 3 weeks time - 26 July!

There's a whole page of photographs here and another on Andrew Reeves-Hall's website
