Recycling News - Bad

The glass recycling containers at The Railway Hotel will be removed at the end of the month. The webmaster has just heard from B&DBC that the new owner of the site has asked for them to be removed. B&DBC emailed the Clerk to the Town Council last week to see if another public site in the North of the town could be identified but to date there has been no response.

If you know of any suitable location, please use the contact page. The recycling page on this website has just been updated with the latest from B&DBC.

New Home Wanted for Friendly Cat

Can anyone help re-home a beautiful silver grey tabby cat? Tilly is 12 and incredibly friendly. She is a small cat with simple needs - love, food and shelter. Sadly, newly diagnosed allergies in 2 members of her owner's family means they cannot keep her and need to find a loving home.

If you can help, please use the contact page.

Lovely Weather for Meadow Activities

Queuing for dipping

Lots of mums, grans and kids visited the Millennium Meadow for the activities.

Some (left) queued for the pond dipping, others (right) took to the shade for refreshments.

Good Weather for Harvest Harvesting in the dark

The good weather is here but only for a short while so local farmers have to make the best of it whatever the time of day it is.

Harvesting is continuing throughout the night in the fields around the Town.

The Bells Told the Story

A 3 hour peal of All Hallows bells took place on Friday evening, the visiting ringers were ably led by Edd Colliss from Southampton.

Another Wide Load

Wide load in AugustAnother abnormally wide and high load travelled along the old A34 (Winchester Street/Road and Newbury Street/Road). Traffic was slowed considerably at around 10am. One report says that the load was a generator bound for the UAE.

Art aplenty in Whitchurch

Three more local artists have joined the Parish Hall exhibition:

Ray Galvani's style can best be described as Primitive or Naïve, in the tradition of the outside artist. Oil paint is his chosen medium. He offers original works, limited edition prints as well as hand made greetings cards. Ray lives and works in Whitchurch.

Sue Climpson creates jewellery, original art and limited edition giclee prints. As an illustrator she has many years experience both in commercial illustration and in fine art. Sue's style is based upon a unique blend of traditional skills of drawing and painting and the very latest computer technology to produce interesting, powerful and very decorative art.

Rebecca Speculo is a ceramic artist from Andover whose focus for ceramic work is an exploration of colour and line, through which she develops a range of unique decorative patterns. Using the thrown vessel, the simple forms Rebecca, from Andover, creates offer a striking contrast between the earthenware structure and the rich decoration.

There's plenty of art to be seen in the Town from the middle of August as part of the county-wide Hampshire Open Studios event. There are two exhibitions, with workshops so you can get involved.

Penny Spooner and Caroline Green, who have been involved before with their ceramics, will be joined this year by Noel Privett, a Whitchurch silversmith, and Alice Bloor, a textile artist from Laverstoke. The display with sales will be in the pottery studio, at the end of Great Lane as it joins Fairclose, on 15th, 16th & 22nd August.

Penny and Caroline will run a workshop for beginners on Sunday 23rd August 23 from 10am to 4pm. The workshop will include instruction on hand building and how to throw a pot on the wheel. The cost will be £55 for the day and participants will be able to take away two glazed and finished pieces of their own work. Just bring along a packed lunch and an apron. Please call 07880 653558 for further information or to book a place (limited to four).

For the first time in the centre of Whitchurch there will be a display of art in the Parish Hall. There are currently three artists from the area who will be displaying their art and running free workshops to show how it is done. The artists are:

  • Sharon Kearley, a textile artist and designer who works with the elements of weaving, felting and machine embroidery.

  • Tim Richardson, a pastel artist who recently moved to Oxfordshire. Tim will be showing a collection of North Hampshire landscape paintings.

  • Bruce Crabbe, a woodcarver who has been carving for 20 years and is a very skilled craftsman, having worked with others on large scale national projects as well as smaller pieces for individuals.

The displays will be in the Parish Hall on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 (10am–5pm); Thursday 20 and Friday 21 (11am– 6pm); Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 (10am–5pm). Full details are here.

Whitchurch is on the Map

New tourist maps have been placed in the Town's notice boards. The new notice boards funded by SEEDA outside the Town Hall and in Bell Street Car Park now have a map for tourists showing the locations of all the businesses and amenities they may be interested in. The design work was done by Blooming Digital in the Whitchurch Business Centre. A further copy of the map will be installed in the new notice board that is planned for the Winchester Street Car Park. You can download your own copy here.

Citizens left to tidy up

Mess left behind by councilA Town Centre traffic accident left a mess Bill Judge rolls up sleevesbehind which needed tidying up. Oil from the accident near the pedestrian crossing was covered with marl by council workmen but the recent light rain caused this to turn into a sticky, unsightly mess that got on shoes, was trailed into shops and made the Square unattractive to any weekend visitors.
It was left to 2 citizens on Saturday morning with brush and watering can to remove the eyesore before it became worse.

Decision about to be made on parking restrictions

The proposed changes that have been under review are about to be implemented. The maps are:

but are subject the following recommended changes:

  • to omit the single yellow line, between property numbers 69 to 79 London Road - reason - there is a risk that vehicles displaced by the proposed single yellow line will simply be parked at other more hazardous locations and/or possibly causing conflict with other residents in areas where parking is already at a premium

  • to retain the existing disabled motorist parking bay outside the chemists on Newbury Street - no reason given for not removing it but cost was the objection to moving it

  • to omit the single yellow line, between property numbers 35 to 41 Newbury Street - reason - there is a risk that vehicles displaced by the proposed parking controls will simply be parked at other more hazardous locations and/or possibly causing conflict with other residents in areas where parking is already at a premium

  • to omit the limited waiting area outside numbers 15 &17 London Street and retain the existing prohibition of waiting at this location - reason - vehicles parked in the proposed limited waiting bay would force eastbound passing traffic to pull-out onto the wrong side of the road into the path of unsighted westbound traffic.
