Great Venue in Whitchurch
« on: November 27, 2006, 01:48:09 pm »

This weekend I attended the excellent Beer Festival held at Longmeadow Sports & Social Club. What a tremendous asset to the Town this venue is. With two different bars, lots of space, good catering and hi-tech presentation equipment, why don't more people use it?
And, why are so many squillions of our money  being spent on another smaller hall by the Silk Mill when we already have such good facilities?

having read your review and recommendation of the the wssc in winchester street

i agree with your views - it is a great venue and in my view, somewhat under used, it is a family orientated sports and social club and membership is very reasonable at 7 per year. the bar prices are cheaper than a pub so you make your membership fee back in no time

there are two bars one of which is a family bar - it is great place to take your kids if you want an evening out

there are events from time to time for the children - panto at xmas, childrens entertainers and disco's etc

i use the family side on sunday afternoons, because being a football fan, i watch the match on the big screen - i take my son there - he is able to safely play in the family side with other children of his age whilst the adults watch the football

the wssc even provide a box of cars and toys - by the way my son is just over 4 years old

well worth a visit as an alternative for families

only downside is that the family bar could do with a refresh on the decoration side (that is purely my view)

note also that as a member you can hire the family side at very reasonable rates

cheers

I do agree with Andrew's comments about the decor in the Longmeadow back bar. One can see the building blocks so it does make it feel a bit like a warehouse.
We had a post Saturn viewing event there and it was super.
As a Landscape Architect I find the reception path from the sports pitches very off putting. So as you enter or leave you are put off coming the next time.
Whitchurch is beginning to buzz a bit more in all sorts of areas, Baptist Hall; Gill Nethercott and Testbourne Theatre but Longmeadow has more parking than all put together a major assett. The management have alwys been very supportive in a synergistic way to the needs of the Millennium Green, we have nowhere for people to park.

The LSCC is definitely a little known asset.

There will be a small piece on it in Update, due out on 1 Nov

Markus,

I think it's chicken and egg, if more people go there theree will be money to spend on improvements which attract more people - and the reverse is also likely to be true, if it isn't attractive then not enough people will go there to raise the money to improve it.
